Francis Ngannou walked away from the UFC earlier this year over disagreements with the promotion on fighter pay, health insurance, sponsorships, and fighter contract issues. When he left, his future seemed uncertain. But within a couple of months, he came out on top with a lucrative contract with PFL.
Additionally, he secured a lucrative boxing match against the lineal heavyweight boxing champion of the world, Tyson Fury. The former UFC heavyweight champion told Joe Rogan how his loss to Stipe Miocic helped him change his training regimen, something which he hopes will help him in the Fury fight.
Francis Ngannou tells Joe Rogan how Stipe Miocic’s loss helped him improve
On episode 146 of the Joe Rogan Experience MMA Show, Francis Ngannou and Joe Rogan talked on a variety of topics. During their chat, the two discussed Cameroonian’s fights against Stipe Miocic.“So what did you change in your training after the first Stipe fight? Did you change anything?” Rogan asked Ngannou.
‘The Predator’ told Rogan that he had changed a lot of things after his loss to Miocic in their first fight at UFC 220. He revealed that he had quit drinking soda, something he consumed a lot after the loss, and credited it with helping him improve.
“First of all, I understand how to train properly… So I changed everything. I focus on everything… that [Stipe] fight really helped me a lot. I think about my diet, think about like the discipline stuff… By the way after the Stipe fight I decided to cut soda or for couple [weeks] before. And since then, I never drink soda,” the heavyweight told Rogan.
Ngannou reveals he used to consume unhealthy food even during fight camp
Rogan asked Ngannou if he was drinking soda even during his camp. “Even in training camp?” the podcast host asked. Surprisingly, the former UFC champion stated he was consuming copious amounts of soda. He stated he was also eating other unhealthy foods such as croissants during training as he felt he was a heavyweight and did not consider the effect it would have on his conditioning.
“Oh, a ton. A ton. In training camp I was eating croissant, everything. And I was like, “no, I’m heavyweight.” I was just focusing about my weight and not about my condition[ing] and all those aspects,” the 37-year-old said.
Francis Ngannou may not have the best MMA pedigree. But, his natural strength, power, and desire to constantly improve saw him reach the top of the UFC heavyweight division. And the way he took his loss against Miocic and used it to improve is a case in point of what makes him so dangerous.
