'Practical Magic' Cast: Where Are They Now?

Posted by Jenniffer Sheldon on Thursday, June 13, 2024

After Practical Magic's 1998 premiere, the fantasy film adaptation has remained a fan-favorite over two decades later — even among its A-list cast.

"I love that movie," Nicole Kidman recalled during a brief reunion with her former costar at the Academy Awards in 2018. "I showed that movie to my kids. It's a little above their [level of understanding] … But we're really good sisters."

For her part, Sandra Bullock recounted her favorite scene from the supernatural flick, the singular and oft-talked about "midnight margaritas" scene, where Bullock and Kidman apparently got tipsy while filming.

"We were talking about when we shot [Practical Magic] together, and we asked her to get the tequila; she came back with her own tequila, but we drank it anyway. We were a little drunk," Bullock said.

The actresses continued to forge impressive careers in Hollywood, with Kidman and Bullock winning Oscars for Best Actress; Kidman for her role in 2002's The Hours and Bullock for her performance in 2009's The Blind Side.

Head down memory lane with the spellbinding Owens family and the personalities of Maria's Island, and check out what the stars have been up to since the cult classic hit theaters on Oct. 16, 1998.

Before Bullock charmed audiences as Sally Owens — the reserved older Owens sister — in Practical Magic, she had already starred in the 1994 action thriller Speed and the 1997 sequel, as well as romantic comedies like 1995's While You Were Sleeping and 1998's Hope Floats. However, her best was yet to come on-screen.

Following her star-turning role in 2000's Miss Congeniality, Bullock continued to rack up film credits in Two Weeks Notice (2002), Crash (2004), Miss Congeniality 2: Armed & Fabulous (2005), Premonition (2007) and The Proposal (2009). In 2010, she nabbed her first Oscar for The Blind Side and was nominated in 2014 for Gravity.

Though Bullock's moviemaking pace has slowed since adopting her two children, son Louis and daughter Laila, she was featured in box office hits and Netflix favorites like Ocean's 8 (2018), Bird Box (2018), The Unforgivable (2021), The Lost City (2022) and Bullet Train (2022).

In August 2023, her longtime partner, photographer Brian Randalldied after a three-year battle with ALS. Bullock and Randall dated from 2015 until his death at the age of 57.

Like Bullock, Kidman was already an established actress before trying her hand at black magic as the carefree and rebellious younger Owens sister. Kidman's fame and on-screen credits continued to grow after the release of Practical Magic, with the actress earning her first Best Actress Oscar nod in 2002 for Moulin Rouge! In 2003, she took home the statuette for The Hours and was nominated again for 2010's Rabbit Hole, 2016's Lion and 2021's Being the Ricardos.

Her other acclaimed films include Cold Mountain (2003), The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017), Boy Erased (2018) and The Northman (2022). She also made a splash in the TV world with her Golden Globe- and Emmy-winning performance as Celeste Wright on HBO's Big Little Lies. In 2020, Kidman teamed up with Hugh Grant for another HBO series, The Undoing, and followed that up in 2021 on Hulu's Nine Perfect Strangers. Since 2023, Kidman has starred on the Paramount+ series Special Ops: Lioness and Amazon Prime Video's Expats.

Kidman has been married to country superstar Keith Urban since June 2006. The couple shares two daughters, Sunday Rose and Faith Margaret. (Kidman is also mother to daughter Isabella and son Connor with ex-husband Tom Cruise.)

Stockard Channing as Aunt Frances

Who can forget the legendary Stockard Channing as Aunt Frances? She portrayed one-half of the witchy sister duo that trained the movie's heroines, Sally and Gillian.

The Oscar-nominated actress — who already appeared in Grease (1978), Six Degrees of Separation (1993) and The First Wives Club (1996) — has had a successful run on the big and small screen since Practical Magic. She had a memorable turn as the president's wife on The West Wing and a recurring role on The Good Wife. Channing has had a guest-starring role on the ITV British series Maryland since 2023.

Channing's other half on-screen was the equally legendary Dianne Wiest, who was already known for a string of hits dating back to the early-'80s, including Footloose (1984) and Woody Allen's The Purple Rose of Cairo (1985). She has also earned two Oscars for her supporting roles in Hannah and Her Sisters (1986) and Bullets Over Broadway (1994).

In 2008, the actress won an Emmy Award for her performance on HBO's In Treatment, and she's since had several other successful stints on TV, including CBS' Life in Pieces and the Paramount+ series Mayor of Kingstown.

Aidan Quinn as Gary Hallet

As the man with one green eye and one blue who answered Sally's call, finally providing a happy ending for the cursed witch, actor Aidan Quinn won over fans as state investigator Gary Hallet.

He continued his streak of playing officers and detectives on shows like Third Watch, Prime Suspect and Elementary.

Since 1987, Quinn has been married to The Sopranos star Elizabeth Bracco. Together, they share two daughters: Ava Eileen and Mia. Quinn is also a longtime friend of his former Blacklight costarLiam Neeson

Evan Rachel Wood as Kylie

A then-11-year-old Evan Rachel Wood played Sally's daughter, who resembled and acted like her Aunt Gillian more than her mom. Wood is the first generation of Owens women who get to practice magic freely and grow up knowing she can fall in love without consequences.

Wood continued in the spotlight and found success in movies and on TV shows, including her critically acclaimed turn on HBO's Westworld, her voice role as Queen Iduna in Disney's Frozen II (2019) and her portrayal of singer Madonna in Weird: The Al Yankovic Story (2022).

In 2013, she welcomed her son, Jack, whom she shares with ex Jamie Bell.

A tiny Camilla Belle played the younger version of Bullock's Sally — complete with dark hair and all — who had the honor of casting the spell that one day brought her true love into her life.

Belle became an It Girl in the mid-2000s. During her brief relationship with Joe Jonas, she appeared in the Jonas Brothers' music video for their 2008 song "Lovebug" before starring in a string of independent movies and having a brief stint on Hulu's Dollface in 2019 and Law & Order: Organized Crime in 2022.

Practical Magic was one of just three credits for Alexandra Artrip, who played Sally's younger daughter, Antonia, in the film. Artrip — who now goes by Lexi — stepped away from Hollywood.

As of 2017, she worked as a sales rep at a paper company based in Birmingham, Alabama, per City Paper Company's Facebook.

Despite playing a character from "somewhere near Transylvania," in real life, Goran Višnjić is from Croatia.

He has appeared on everything from ER to 2011's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and in Madonna's "The Power of Good-Bye" music video since Practical Magic.

His other credits include This Is Us, Dollface and The Boys, as well as the 2022 Hulu reboot film Hellraiser.

Since 1999, the actor has been married to painter Eva (née Ivana Vrdoljak), with whom he adopted son Tin and daughter Vivien. He also has another daughter from a previous relationship.

Mark Feuerstein as Michael

Mark Feuerstein won hearts as Sally's adorable, ill-fated husband Michael. Following Practical Magic, he acted in films like What Women Want (2000) and In Her Shoes (2005) and appeared in a lead role on the TV series Royal Pains from 2009 to 2016.

Feuerstein also starred on Netflix's lauded reboot of The Baby-Sitters Club, which earned him a Children's & Family Emmy Award nomination for outstanding lead performance. Since 2020, he has had a recurring role on the Starz sequel Power Book II: Ghost.

Off-screen, Feuerstein is married to television producer Dana Klein, who's worked on shows like Friends and Fresh Off the Boat. Together, they have two daughters, Lila and Addie, and a son named Frisco.

Margo Martindale as Linda Bennett

Margo Martindale shined and brought comic relief as one of the Owens sisters' few allies in town.

She's thrived in film and TV ever since, winning three Emmys for her roles on Justified and The Americans — and garnering acclaim for Impeachment: American Crime Story and The Watcher. Since 2023, the beloved character actress has appeared in the Elizabeth Banks-directed comedy Cocaine Bear and on the series Accused, Your Honor and Mrs. Davis.

She reunited with her former Practical Magic costar Bullock in 2000's 28 Days and Kidman in The Hours and 2003's The Human Stain.

Martindale has been married to William "Bill" Boals since 1986, with whom she shares daughter Margaret.

Chloe Webb as Carla

Arguably best known for playing Nancy Spungen in 1986's Sid and Nancy, Chloe Webb was Carla, the quirky (and maybe slightly witchy herself) employee at Sally's botanical shop.

Webb went on to do a string of TV guest spots before landing the role of Monica Gallagher on Showtime's hit series Shameless.
