These Lisa Eldridge lipsticks were feature in the Barbie movie, so we had to try them of course

National Lipstick Day has coincided with our international Barbie era. So it was only right that this week's instalment of GLAMOUR Tries featured the Lisa Eldridge Velveteen Liquid Lip Colours.

The timing truly couldn't have been more perfect, considering the recent revelations that Lisa Eldridge's lip products graced Margot Robbie's lips throughout the entire Barbie movie. To top it off, Mattel chose Lisa Eldridge as the official makeup for their Barbie Dreamhouse Pop-up shop in Selfridges, London. Armed with excitement and curiosity, we set out to put these lip colours to the test.

Available in eight un-dupable shades, the shades range from deep, sultry reds to soft, nude pinks. As the name suggests they're formulated with a velvety texture that glides on effortlessly, leaving intense colour payoff and a radiant matte finish in a single swipe. The formula is also weightless with no dryness or discomfort in sight. The precision applicator is also designed to allow for easy and controlled application, so you can effortlessly define the contours of your lips.

As for staying power, celebrity MUA Lisa Eldridge wanted to create a product that can really last all day, fit for purpose for someone like President Barbie, or the Busy Barbie in all of us.

In true GLAMOUR form, we tested out these three popular shades of the Velveteen Liquid Lip Colours, to see if they can earned their place as a beauty must-have. Here are five people with different complexions' honest thoughts.

Shade: Ribbon

I'm not one to wear a bold lip but I wanted to give these a go because it had major praises and I'm very much drinking the Barbie cool-aid too. I went for the punchy Ribbon red shade. A powerhouse of a colour, the hue of confidence. As I applied it on my bottom lip, it felt as soft and as velvety as promised. The wand is perfectly shaped for easy application which I love. It contours around the cupids bow effortlessly. The pigment is strong, so I cannot argue about the colour payoff, however, it had quite a cool undertone when it latched onto my dual colour lips. I think that my complexion needed a warmer hue, so I wasn't obsessed with the shade itself.

The finish was not as matte as I expected either, and it had more of a satin lipstick sheen to it. I was expecting a Barbie matte. It did dry off eventually to a more matte and velvetty finish, but it took a while, so if you're in a rush, be aware that the colour might travel until it fully sets. A lip liner might also go a long way to stop the colour from bleeding. As far as the formula goes though, I'm still impressed. Once set it lasted the while. I don't know if I'll be grabbing this one for my day to day, but it might be a cute one to throw on for date night…

Shade: Muse

While I'm more of a glossy girl, I can always appreciate a good matte lip. When I saw the Velveteen Liquid Lip Colour in its packaging, I had high hopes. The share I used, 'Muse', is a rosy nude, which I tend to go for usually.

Applying the product was a dream, it glided on without bleeding or smudging and I was able to coat my lips with just one application. It dried super quickly which is a huge plus, as I'm always rushing to get ready. The biggest downside for me was that it felt quite drying on my lips, and I could really feel it there, as opposed to a lightweight feeling.

Shade: Rain

Full disclosure, I'd never tried anything by Lisa Eldridge before the Velveteen Liquid Lip Colour, so I was going in with no expectations. First thoughts: packing was *very* chic – loved the gold lid – and the doe foot applicator was plump and precise enough for targeted application. I used the shade Rain which is a natural, medium pink with both warm and cool tones, and felt like it complimented my skin tone really well.

Application was easy – I didn't need to use any lip liner to achieve a defined Cupid's Bow – and the colour pay-off was intense. The only thing I didn't love was how quickly it smudged on my lips. I didn't feel like I could eat or drink with it on, without a compact mirror in hand.

Shade: Ribbon

I'm definitely a matte lip girlie through and through. That being said, having tried many matte formulas over the past years, I would consider myself a tough critic. There's so many factors that need to be nailed down: the formula has to be weightless yet not too drying, the pigment payoff must be through the roof and the applicator has to be precise enough to allow for a perfect application. Little did I know that the new Lisa Eldridge Velveteen Liquid Lip Colour would tick all the boxes.

Right off the bat, I was very impressed with the luxurious packaging, and I was immediately hooked once I saw the pigment payoff (one swipe is really all you need). The best part is that throughout the day, it didn't budge or smudge (apart from the corners of my lips, but that's to be expected) and still managed to feel so lightweight, I almost forgot I had lipstick on. Plus, the gorgeous bright red shade complimented my complexion in the best way possible - definitely revisiting this lippie in the run-up to Christmas.

Shade: Muse

I'm a big fan of liquid lipsticks that dry down to a matte, skin-mimicking texture and don't need to be constantly reapplied over the course of the day. The trouble is, many fall short of actually feeling comfortable on your lips (hello dry, chalky pout!). That's definitely not the case with this Lisa Eldridge Velveteen Liquid Lip Colour. The pigment is punchy but it still feels weightless and hydrating on your lips.

It's a cinch to swipe on thanks to the angled doe foot wand and it doesn't hurt that the packaging is so chic. I'm wearing Muse, a your-lip-but-better rose pink shade that can be applied precisely with the wand or patted onto your lips with your finger for a blurred, snogged effect. Better still, the formula stays put from desk to bar.
